Learning Challenge: Time

Image
I chose to do my last learning challenge over time due to that being something I had struggled with through the duration of this class. As of here recently I did not have a schedule to do the class assignments. This was definitely a product of having too much on my plate at once and putting this class on the back burner to do everything else for other classes. I started off with doing the core assignments however during the week as events and other assignments were due I found myself having to make up all points at once. This was due to having a lack of energy after getting home from work or just a long day of classes. In result of all my faults with time management of this class I am not able to finish with the grade I wanted which is very disappointing. If I could go back in time there definitely would be moments I would have made myself push through and got all the work done as needed and stuck with a schedule. Time Management

EC: Mythology Video- Gods & Goddesses

Image
After watching the first video, "Great Goddesses", it was more centered on how many goddesses of mythology are known to provide wealth and fertility. However they can also be a tad bit sneaky and have loopholes involved in their interests. It was also found that many ancient womanly statues had been found suggesting that maybe the/a woman was worshiped in the ancient times. In the second video, "Fire and Buffalo Goddesses" it is started with a story of these Hawaiian goddesses and how one had fell in love but became angry and decided to burn, with lava, the other sister's things. Long story short it is questioned whether our actions towards the gods influence their actions towards us. I feel like depending on the god's intentions, this could be a true thing. The third video explored Archetypes and Male Divinities. It was very interesting to see how usually in mythology how the sons of a god usually become conduits of their father's attributes. Yet, th

Wikipedia Trail: From Pineapple to PlayStation 3

Image
Pineapple with Sunglasses Pineapple  was my first search due to random thought from a friend! Upon researching pineapples, which are indigenous to South America, I came across  tepache ! Tepache "is a fermented beverage made from the peel and the rind of pineapples, and is sweetened either with piloncillo or brown sugar, seasoned with powdered cinnamon, and served cold." Upon reading about this tasteful drink it brought me to  Street Fighter IV . Street Fighter IV is a fighting video game made into 2008 in which "the luchador character El Fuerte has a move list that reads like a combination of a restaurant menu and...Tepache is one such item referenced in it." This brought me to my last search of  PlayStation 3 ! The PlayStation 3 is a popular video game console in which the previous game mentioned can be played. It is also my personal favorite console to play on! :)

Week 6 Story Revision

Egyptian Sisters There once was two sisters, Chione and Dalilah, whom lived in a very rich garden full of every fruit and flower you could imagine. They loved to spend their time running through the garden playing tag and smelling the sweet flowers. They would sit and enjoy a basket of fruit they had collected, talking about how they wanted to marry a prince and live in a beautiful palace with their own gardens. One day their father overheard them talking about marriage and knew the time had come. Upon the next day he called Chione out from the garden to come meet a guest. The guest was nicely dressed and spoke of taking Chione to his land and living happily with her never having to do any work. Chione thought that he must have been the prince she had been dreaming and longing for. She agreed to marry him and by the evening they were husband and wife. Dalilah was very saddened to see her sister marry and leave the home but still had hope for her own happiness.  As the days

Week 4 Story: Hannah the Hedgehog

Image
Hannah the Hedgehog THERE was once a countryman who had money and plenty of land but yet he was unhappy for he had no children. One day he became so upset he said, "I will have a child, even if it be a hedgehog." However when his wife conceived that hedgehog child, the man was still unhappy. Hannah the Hedgehog saw daily how unhappy her parents were to have her and thought of an idea. "Dear father, I will ride away and never come back again only if you bring me a fiddle from the market." The father rushed off to get a fiddle and not only did he get any old fiddle, but the very best one in hopes this would make the child stay away. Hannah took the fiddle and left as she had promised for that's all she had. She went deep into the forest and managed to find home in a mulberry bush where she played her fiddle day in and day out. One day a lost King came stumbling through the forest and heard the music. He was astonished at the sound and sent a serva

Reading Part B: Hans the Hedgehog

Image
Hans the Hedgehog on a Cock This story was very interesting to read, as are all the others of course. The moral of the story was essentially that you should do what you promise. We see that the first king was greedy in nature and did not want to give up his first sight. I wonder if this was due to age cause later we see that a second king came through the woods who was older. I feel like age played a part in the story as far as the second king being wiser. The story was told in a third person/narrator point of view and I wonder how it would be from a first person point of view with that being of the Hedgehog. I would like to re-write this story but have it from his perspective and also maybe make the Hedgehog a girl and have the king's promise her their hand in marriage.  Bibliography: Household Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm , translated by Margaret Hunt (1884).

Reading Part A: Brothers Grimm (Crane) Unit

Image
Bride Illustrated by Walter Crane For my reading notes part A I decided to do them over the story The Robber Bridegroom.  Right at the start of the story we are presented with repetition with the caged bird saying, "Turn back, turn back, thou pretty bride, Within this house thou must not bide, For here do evil things betide". The wording used and having this rhyme being repeated gives the audience a sudden urge of despair and worry as though we are feeling what the bride is. The actions leading up to this scene, the girl throwing out peas even though there is ash, are also important cause it foreshadows the insecurity felt by the girl and what's to come. The repetition returns again when the bride is recapping the story to her bridegroom saying, "Sweetheart, my dream is not yet ended" which symbolizes that she may be being interrupted and how important it is for her to finish. Week 13 Story: The Secret

Image
Once way back in a time long ago lived this old lady. She had snow white hair, a very round back, and a mole the size of a blueberry, on the corner of her lip. The old lady was seen to be out roaming upon the lands only late at night. However every night, when the moon was its highest, she would stop at a small pond and gaze at the castle that lie ahead. She would sit and stare at the illuminated castle for hours until the sun was near the horizon.  One night the old lady felt as though she was not alone and called out to her surroundings, "Who goes there?"  she called and received an answer from a very beautiful girl who wore the brightest of colors and of which the fabric was the best.  "It is I, for I have a secret that is eating me away! May I trust in you to tell?" The old lady nodded her head and the girl began to speak of it. As the sun began to rise, the old lady exclaimed how she must return home and for the girl to do the same. After tha

Reading Part B: Canterbury Tales

Image
Canterbury Tales' Pilgrims For reading part B of the Canterbury Tales, one story that caught my eye in particular was that of The Cock, the Hen, and the Fox. For the start of the story, the pilgrim tells two tales of two men. Within each he goes into showing how worthy dreams are....which doesn't pertain to the title. I feel this to maybe be an attempt to real the audience in and made me want to see when the cock, the hen, and the fox would come into play. For the ending of the story we get the story of the cock, the hen, and the fox finally yet there was no significance of the hen. However, the story ends with the strong lesson of "but bad luck to him who talks when he ought to hold his peace." This was surprising due to not realizing originally that's the reason the cock was able to be taken. Bibliography: The Chaucer Story Book  by Eva March Tappan (1908)

Reading Notes Part A: Canterbury Tales

Image
Man Reading Canterbury Tales I chose Canterbury Tales this week to do my reading notes over and hopefully also my story this week! The reasoning behind this selection was due to the overview about the tales. In this overview, it talks about how the Canterbury Tales is a group of tales told by seven pilgrims from that time. Each pilgrim gives count of different stories in a contest to see who can tell the best story. The main points that reel me into the stories are how each one has a very great and prominent climax such as in The Wife of Bath's Tale :Unknown Bride . The rising action in this story this makes us, the audience, sit on edge and eager to keep reading on what is to come. Then once we do find out what is happening, it contains such humor and twist that we are left feeling dumbfounded on the action! That specific trait of a humored plot twist makes the stories that much better. Also the ability of the writing to keep a sort of humor with the character's being dr

Wikipedia Trail: From Thanksgiving to the Great Depression

Image
I started off with Thanksgiving in honor of the holiday quickly approaching next week. I learned that some believe that the first day of thanks didn't occur in what is now the United States, but actually in Canada. In the past each state had a different date of celebrating Thanksgiving until October 31st, 1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed to have it always on the second to last Thursday in November for business reasons. Franklin made a huge impact on the economy while in office including his New Deal . This was a series of programs and financial reforms to help the people in response to the Great Depression . Most think of pictures of the Dust Bowl as the Great Depression, however that was just a product of the Great Depression. The GD was the first time the United States went into an economic recession. It caused major companies to close, unemployment, and poverty. Al Capone's Soup Kitchen During the Great Depression, 1931

Learning Challenge: What Would Happen If You Didn't Sleep?

Image
Dog & Cat Deliberate Attention Meme One thing the video confirmed that I already knew before was how important sleep is and how much someone my age should be getting. (7-8hrs) One thing I learned was the condition of Fatal Familial Insomnia. This is a condition where your body won't let you fall asleep, which could long term lead to dementia or death. After watching the video, I want to try to get the recommended amount of sleep per night that I should. I am curious to see how it will effect my attention, learning experiences, and health. I will begin to plan out what time I need to go to bed by and actually act upon it.

Growth Mindset: Learn From Other Students

Image
The two quotes I chose for this Growth Mindset post are both things that I struggle with reminding myself. You Will Be Okay Cat Meme The first quote that caught my eye was the personal mantra of one student being, "You will be okay". As the semester goes and exams come up, dealing with working and making sure I have time to do my assignments is a daily struggle. Sometimes it becomes to big of a struggle to where I need to call my mom and talk out strategy of what to do next. At the end of the phone call she says "You will be okay" and just hearing that resonates with me and helps me get through it. R.E.L.A.X The second one being R.E.L.A.X. This means Rest and Energize yourself to Live life And Xplore. This really does hold an important message because I often pile so much onto my plate that I end up not taking care of my own self. I have been trying to tell myself that when I feel the tension but it still is so hard to allow myself to take a moment

Tech Tip: Canvas Dashboard

Besides the fact of needing extra credit points, I chose to do my tech tip over Canvas because of reading about Laura's (our professor) experience with going to a Canvas workshop. I have noticed that I personally don't use the Dashboard To-Do sidebar that often. I usually go into the course and reference the sidebar there. After learning about the Dashboard I configured it to "list view" to try out for a while. I like how it shows me a day by day on when/what things are do. In general, I do like the Canvas Dashboard. It was definitely a change from the old system but glad to have it and its versatility.

EC Reading Notes: Lamb Version of Shakespeare

Image
Romeo Professing Love to Juliet After reading this version of Romeo and Juliet, it helped with figuring out how I wanted and needed to shorten the original story. In this story by Lamb, he takes caution to give special attention to the more important parts of the story and detailing them as such the audience still understands what is happening without having to read the original version by Shakespeare. I feel that is my biggest takeaway from reading this prose by Lamb. Also it acted as being very helpful in review of Romeo and Juliet. Bibliography: Tales from Shakespeare , Charles Lamb, 1878

Story Lab: TEDEd Videos: Language

Image
Grammatical Lessons Over  Prescriptivists and Descriptivists by Andreea S. Calude For this week I decided to do a Story Lab over language, grammar, and punctuation. This decision came to me after having completed and receiving revisions on my first story. One of my biggest corrections needed was that of grammar. How to word things and realizing I was switching tenses, were both problems I needed to correct. After watching the TEDEd videos, I have realized that language is continuously revolving and how complex grammar actually is! Seeing how languages have formed and stemmed essentially from each other is amazing. One thing about grammar that really caught me was realizing that the last time when I was taught grammar was years ago in middle school. Therefore it makes sense why I missed such things and also why colleges encourage the taking of an intensive writing course. The video I posted above, and ones similar, will definitely be one I reference when writing my next story for

Reading Notes: Nursery Rhymes Part B

Image
Wikipedia:  This Is the House That Jack Built My two focuses of this reading note is on that of beautiful sentences and character charting. Since theses stories are nursery rhymes, the way they are told must be in an uplifting way even though what is being said may not be exactly joyous. Such as in the rhyme of Jack and Jill, "Jack and Jill went up the hill To fetch a pail of water; Jack fell down and broke his crown, And Jill came tumbling after." As kids, singing this we laughed and joked about such a rhyme, but when you actually think about it, it is pretty sad cause Jack actually dies. Also through character charting we are given very important characteristics in short rhymes about a character. Being able to do such in my own storybook would be essential. Reading Notes: Eskimo Folk Tales (Part A)

Image
Eskimo Woman Posing for photographer Lomen Brothers in 1915. Overall, the majority stories don't really present a rising action that leads to the climax. Most of the climaxes catch you off guard as in you don't realize what is happening till it happens. I like that aspect of catching the audience off guard but at the same time I do like drawing up suspense. Next, there isn't much attention given to the setting in most of the stories. The author goes directly into the stories and dialogue and gets you involved into what is going on.  Bibliography: Eskimo Folk-Tales  by Knud Rasmussen with illustrations by native Eskimo artists (1921).

Story Lab: Revision of Week 7 Story

There once lived a group of women who seeked roots, herbs, and other wild food to feed their village. One day, on a trip home they became hungry and decided to eat something from the fields. One woman was so nice enough to share the little herbs and roots she had picked that day. The herbs and roots were so divine to taste because the woman took the time to pick the ripest.   The woman, who had picked all the delicious herbs and food, over heard the other women talking about her. They made her throw away her wonderful herbs because they were jealous their's were not as great and this really saddened her. She decided that she wasn't going to listen to them and ran into the woods where she came upon a hare. "Give me some water that I may drink", she requested of the hare. The hare responded that he had borrowed the cup from his uncle lion and she could not drink from it. Once again she asked only to be met with the same reply. At this point she was pretty f

Reading Notes: Great Plains

Image
Flathead Family with Tipi One common theme between all the stories is their use of description. The types of description given are so simple yet provide us, the audience, with a vivid image of what is being described. Such as, "The winds came from all sides and they blew until the waters went upwards, as in a mist." This sentence to me is so vivid in imaging what this scene looks like. Another note to be made is how there is a lot of repetition within each story and amoung them all. In the individual stories, you can see how they came about choosing their animal of importance by giving trial to all others and very shortly explaining why the other animals could not succeed. Overall you can see repetition between all the stories by just the use of having animals be the wise ones or for showing the people how to live. Lastly, the stories all use a very simple way of talking and explaining things. The don't use big or difficult words to get the meanings and lessons acr

Week 9 Story:

"Sir it's that time again.", stated one little elf. He was so excited that his little cheeks were rosy red.  "You're right Sam!", exclaimed the big jolly man himself. "We better get started before we get behind. Go and spread the word to all the other elves and let's get the workshop going!"  This was the time of year when the air is filled with chill and the wind carries the sweet smell of pies and cakes. It's Christmas time, the jolliest time of the year! So you better watch out, and you better not cry. You better not pout cause I will tell you why....Santa Clause is coming to town!  So let me tell you a little story about Christmas... ...Up at the North pole, Santa receives mail daily like no other, especially in December. He sits and reads every piece and even responds to some too! His most important job though, is to go over this HUGE checklist he has of every boy and girl from all over the world! But let's talk abo

Week 8 Progress

Image
Looking back... ...I am "ok" with the progress I have made thus far. There was one week that I fell behind on the assignments that I still need to make up for but its just been crazy since we are in midterms currently. I plan on getting back up to where I was grade wise, hopefully, after this week since class exams have settled for now. Ha-ha extra credit here I come! For me it's hard to get into a good routine and keep it due to my work schedule changing from week to week and everything else in between. However I do believe I have found the perfect time for me to get the work done...mornings! That's when I feel like my brain is the clearest to write my notes and especially the stories, which I like the most! I really can't wait to see how my storybook turns out, cause so far I think it's looking mighty fine!  Looking forward... I feel like the best thing for me to do is when I have the extra time, to go ahead and get stuff done! Because, when I thi

Week 8 Comments & Feedback

Image
1. Feedback in.   I feel like overall I haven't received that many comments, but on a couple of more recent ones I have gotten I do feel like they have been useful. The comments I am finding most useful are those that catch something in my story that I didn't think to elaborate on. I have also had a comment on the font that I use for my blog which inspired me to do some updating! :) 2. Feedback out.   As far as the feedback I leave for other students, I have been using T.A.G mostly cause I feel it gives a well balanced mix of critique and praise. For one assignment, I did try the "Let's Pretend" form of feedback and I must say, it is really kind of hard to do that, however it was pretty cool! As I read others' stories, it does give me ideas on how to twist the next one I write by using very creative names and plot twists. 3. Blog comments.   Actually after reading a few people's introductions I have realized that I have already met them in

Week 8 Reading and Writing

Ghostly Woods of Mt.Penn I picked the above picture because it was used for my very first  reading notes that led to my first story! Overall, how well are the reading and writing assignments working for you?              ~Overall, I feel like the assignments themselves aren't bad. Just finding the time to actually sit down to do the work among my work for my other classes is hard. At first I didn't understand the concept behind doing the reading notes but it later made sense that they were for helping write that week's story. Are you happy with your blog? With your project website?              ~I am happy with my blog website. I will be doing some extra credit tech tips later in the following weeks to make some adjustments. I received a comment from a classmate (thank you!) that the post writing font is kind of hard to read, so I went and made some changes to the font and also the colors of the background and title font. As for my project website, I am exc

EC Reading Notes: Overview of Mythology

Image
Extra Credit After watching the videos, it put into perspective how we do not know whether a myth or folklore is real or even had truth. The aspect of having these stories passed down for generations/centuries and supposedly staying true to the story also holds significance as well. Therefore it adds a kind of questioning feeling as to whether it could really be true if there are multiple accounts of the same story throughout the whole world. Looking at it, it seems to be more of the lessons behind the stories that are being retold and staying alive through time. This can be applied to my storybook in the aspect of keeping the main story essentially and the lessons learned from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet yet changing the way its told. Reading Notes Part B: Japanese Fairy Tales (Ozaki)

Japanese Ogre Art For today's notes, I noticed how in the stories the author gives a good description of the problem/monster at hand. He/She goes into elaboration on the creature and then follows up with a story pertaining to a misconception at first by the wanderer/journeyer. Then later does a subtle reveal of the character and why the community people say the things they do about the monster. I also shows how use of rationality is needed more than personal needs and ego. Reading Notes: Part B Ancient Egyptian Myths & Stories

Image
Reading Notes Part B: Story #1 Two Brothers Flowering Acacia I really enjoyed how the author brought justice to the truthful. The ways in revealing the truths behind each injustice was really neat. Also the author showed how we naturally act without thinking when our hearts are involved such as Anpu listening to his wife and almost killing his brother without even hearing Bata's side at first. Lastly, having the truthful Bata win in the end was great in showing how those whom are shady don't win at the game. Story #2 Book of Thoth Papyrus of Ani In this story, I valued how the main character was determined and outsmarting the skeptics. I felt as though the language used with this story was easier to read and follow. The author also had very smooth transitions from beginning to climax to end with a witty ending to the overall story. Also the twist of the family all "dying" was very interesting since technically they were suppose to harness po

Famous Last Words...Feeling the Struggle

Image
First off....I can't believe October is right around the corner. That means its low key time to start stressing out about class assignments and exams. I definitely felt that this last week. I've noticed that when things start to pick up in my other classes I tend to put those assignments first before this class, and its not helping me at all. I told myself my best bet was to just "stock up" on points over the weekends but with work and other obligations I haven't got that far yet. Honestly, trying to catch my wave in this class is a tad bit harder than I originally thought. I start off strong in the beginning of the week but by Thursday, I'm kind of mentally dead. Usually when I get home in the evenings after school/work I am almost brain dead and reading/comprehending isn't exactly a priority. However, I believe I am going to start getting up earlier in the mornings before my other classes, to work on the projects for this class. I feel with doing this, m

Learning Challenge...Future of Storytelling

Image
Furr Baby Eyes by BloomerBlue The video confirmed for me that our brain produces those chemicals, oxytocin and cortisol, in response to how our surroundings make us feel.  The one new thing I learned is that you can judge, at least with 80% accuracy, which people are willing to give donations based on the levels of cortisol and oxytocin in the blood.  I'm curious to see how the people around me would react to being shown this video. I would play it to them and before the narrator goes into talking about the details, I would stop the video and ask how much would they donate (after being given some money for watching the video).

Wikipedia Trail: From Cicely Tyson to Elvis Presley

Image
Cicely Tyson To start my Wikipedia trail, I  begin with  Cicely Tyson ! I actually was drawn to learn more about her while doing a Growth Mindset extra credit assignment. Our professor, Laura, spoke about how she really enjoys Cicely's work and had a link to her Wikipedia page. I already knew of her but not about her achievements which led me to the next topic.  In 2016 (I believe) Cicely was awarded the  Presidential Medal of Freedom , which is the highest civilian medal given in the United States...impressive right?! It is given to those for "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors". It can also be awarded to one individual more than once or even after death. One such individual who received the medal  posthumously was,  Elouise Cobell , also known as Yellow Bird Woman. During her time alive she was a Blackfeet tribal elder, activi

Growing Mindset: Sprouts Video

Image
Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset Sprouts Video One thing this video confirmed for me already was how a open minded individual is better than a closed one. Having the ability to grow within oneself is so much better than being closed off to what you think you can only do. The one new thing that I really hadn't noticed before after doing the first Growth Mindset project was how nurture is better than nature. In the video he used the example of twins, one who had been adopted and the other who stayed with the biological parents. Just how nurturing the adopted one was better than automatically assessing the achievements of the one who stayed with biological parents based on their own success.  One thing I am going to explore is my thought logic on receiving exam grades back. Usually if its not what I was shooting for I personally put myself down and get into a fixed mindset of "I'm just not that smart". However I need to change that and start thinking about ho

Reading Notes Part A: Fables of Bidpai

Image
First to note, I really took interest in how the Bidpai was able to reduce such mass amounts of reading into four paragraphs that summarized the main points of all the readings for the king. Since I am using the story of Romeo and Juliet, the original story is sought to be quite long and therefore implementing something as condensation of the story to the more important parts will be beneficial. (Image:  Maharaja of Indore ) Secondly, the overall theme of testing ones values/beliefs for if they are good, the recipient gifts the other with good things. Once again relating to my project, this theme is one I would like to employ in one of my versions of Romeo and Juliet. Being that in the original story, it was mostly centered on the tragedy, I would like to incorporate the test of good/bad and having the consequences shown. Lastly, seeing in the story of Romeo and Juliet, the thoughts of being superior or having really big dreams instead of thinking about the current times led

Reading Notes: Adam & Eve, Part A

Image
Frontispiece to King James' Bible, 1611 This week I chose the story of Adam & Eve to take reading notes from. This is due to my storybook idea of the recreation of Romeo & Juliet. In the story of Adam & Eve it is noted how he was first with Lilith and things weren't working yet the angels and God wanted her with Adam. I compare this to Romeo and Rosaline and how he cared/loved so much for Rosaline yet she wasn't fond in returning the love which led him to Juliet, as Adam to Eve. To further evaluate, the instance when Eve was prompted and took the apple from the tree can be seen similar to Juliet being told not to be with Montague boy (Romeo) yet doing it anyways. This ultimately leads to the end of both of their lives, which is similar to God adding punishment to Adam and Eve. So overall what I have taken from part A readings is how to show the relationship between the things the characters do and what the resulting consequences are. Also, having a clear

Week 3 Feedback Strategies

Image
Feedback Quote  By Ken Blanchard For this assignment, the first article I chose was  "How to Give Feedback Without Sounding Like A Jerk" . I chose this specifically because I know from personal experience this is a small difficulty. I have found that switching the wording of the question you're using for feedback or even your tone (if in person) can really help! One thing the article pointed out that I like most was how most people tend to gloss over the middle of a conversation so its best to give positive feedback at the beginning and end. Another big part mentioned was to engage in dialogue and not a manipulative monologue. I feel this helps tremendously over online situations cause even though the two aren't present for real conversation, one can be actively made allowing free and easy feedback. The second article I chose was " Why Do So Many Managers Avoid Giving Praise " mainly because of my work environment. There are specific supervisors we em

Oh Where Art Thou Topic Research

Image
Hey guys! So after some deliberation, I have decided to follow the Shakespearean path and do a recreation of Romeo & Juliet! Prehistoric Romeo & Juliet *: The Archaeological Society SAP / AP Okay, so for starters the idea for one version of the story is the most obvious/wanted....turning the frown upside down! Meaning, I have thought about making the tragic love story into one of happiness and living characters. I know the ending of the play was one everyone hated and wished that there had been better communication between the two as far as "dying". This leads me to my second idea... Since the 1990's remake of Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio, there hasn't been another. My second idea for a story would be to bring the characters to modern times. This would instill a more relatable environment to the actual characters for my viewers. My thoughts on such would be to place Romeo and Juliet in today's society yet leaving all the unique cha
