Wikipedia Trail: From Cicely Tyson to Elvis Presley

  • To start my Wikipedia trail, I  begin with Cicely Tyson! I actually was drawn to learn more about her while doing a Growth Mindset extra credit assignment. Our professor, Laura, spoke about how she really enjoys Cicely's work and had a link to her Wikipedia page. I already knew of her but not about her achievements which led me to the next topic.
  • In 2016 (I believe) Cicely was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian medal given in the United States...impressive right?! It is given to those for "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors". It can also be awarded to one individual more than once or even after death.
  • One such individual who received the medal  posthumously was, Elouise Cobell, also known as Yellow Bird Woman. During her time alive she was a Blackfeet tribal elder, activist, banker, rancher, and lead plaintiff in the class-action suit Cobell v. Salazar.
  • Before her death, Cobell was the president of Montana's Elvis Presley club! Elvis, as most should know, was an outstanding American singer and actor. He was/is known as the King of Rock and starred in Love Me Tender, which was his film debut. In 1977 he died of a massive heart attack at his Graceland estate which has now become one of the largest tourist attractions and one I hope to visit!
